"The Exam Room" - The Issue
 A Right Worth Fighting For

In America, there are an estimated 200 million guns in private hands, of which untold millions are unregistered illegal weapons. Some would like to take our guns away, but not me. There are those who hunt for game and target practice, while others compete in Olympic Games, and still others rely on them in the game of life for self-protection as the ultimate defense.

As a constitutionalist, I firmly believe our nation's founding fathers sought a balancing act between allowing the freedom of individual expression with personal rights versus establishing a sovereign nation possessing a sense of national unity with protection and synergistic support for its members. The founders clearly wanted this government to be strong enough to protect us against enemies domestic and foreign while not becoming oppressive in and of itself.

The right of individuals to own guns is a partial recognition of a need for check and balance at the personal level between citizens and their government; therefore, as the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution clearly states, "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

"The Diagnosis" - What's Ailing Us?
Why the Right of Gun Ownership is Important

When the Klan came after many blacks during our nation's more repressive periods, an unappreciated story was the armed resistance of some blacks which kept the Klan at bay. The Constitution recognizes the possibility that even in the best of hands, tyranny can happen and citizens must resist and have that right. In NC where people like to hunt, guns are important.

In John Stossel's January 23, 2004 ABC television report on the myths surrounding firearms in the United States, his interviews of felons confirmed what the National Institute of Justice found -- "Felons say that the thing they fear most is not the police, not time in prison, but you, another American who might be armed." With the armed streets of our cities by gangs, illegal aliens who are displacing citizens from their jobs, big money being made on illegal drugs, and other criminal activity, unless someone thinks of something equally effective, people may have to arm themselves to protect person, home and hearth.

I was intrigued by the website of Jews For the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, Inc. who oppose concealed carry permits as a form of government control of arms. They make it clear that "government-issued permits ‘allowing’ people to bear arms are an infringement on fundamental rights.”

You have a right to defend your life. That's G-d’s law. Permits--a revocable privilege from the state-- replace G-d’s law with man's law."

"The Prescription" - Dr. Fisher's Solution
 A More Civil Society

The Supreme Court's recent ruling giving law enforcement the right to enter premises without announcing who they are can have deadly consequences for authorities given the number of people armed in today's society. The emerging drug culture whether from illegal street drugs to legal prescription medications is having a negative effect on our sense of safety and personal health. The reign of terror by terrorists - domestic and foreign - says that violence will be increasingly more than a passing trend; it may become a deeply entrenched way of life.

Our way of thinking about civil liberties is changing but shouldn't veer too far from constitutional rights of citizens. Getting people to obey the law is desired; however, there are always going to be those who want to take the law into their own hands. Taking back our streets and neighborhoods is imperative. Leaders, particularly blacks need to march and protest against the gangs as much as we do for civil rights., We need to turn in law breakers and clean up our neighborhoods for the victims are more often us not them.

Community watch organizations, having law enforcement personnel live in neighborhoods which they police and youth summer employment as well as after school activities are some things that have worked to decrease lawlessness. Good jobs which stay in this country also might help. More role models who look like those in the communities they serve are also important. As one who has helped removed bullets and understands the perils of an armed citizenry, a bottom-line issue still remains that people should have a right to own fire arms even if it is just for their own sense of personal security.

The Patient File - Position Statement
 Gun Control

Fundamental to this free and democratic society is the "right to bear arms." The second amendment to the United State Constitution clearly states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." I support the second amendment.
