"The Exam Room" - The Issue
 We Should All Serve

Attending funerals for veterans, I am always struck that in presenting the US flag to the deceased's family, these words are said: "On behalf of a grateful nation..." As our reliance on a voluntary military service corps has increased, it is apparent that fewer are voluntarily answering the call to defend this great nation from enemies, domestic and foreign, though all benefit from their sacrifices.

Any politician who says we should bring back the draft in this time of increasing reluctance to involve our nation in military conflicts is probably committing political suicide. But realistically, when is it time to fight and what are we willing to die for? Staying the course in honor may be required to beat the growing perception, among those who would like us to fail, that this nation doesn't have the will to fight long conflicts or that we really don't understand what our national security is all about.

"The Diagnosis" - What's Ailing Us?
 Gaining Experience While Serving

Unemployment and the high numbers of students with limited skills' proficiency for a global work force says we must have an alternative to provide training for young people who are dropping out of and tuning out public schools before they finish high school or go to college. The number of young people lacking the self discipline to be on time, exhibit professionalism on their jobs, dress and act appropriately in social interactions, and take responsibility for their lives says we need an alternative to mama's house.

Labor intensive jobs in nursing homes don't often have the manpower to lift and move the heavy patients which more males could lend. Schools could use assistants with reading capabilities, skills in communications, as well as child care managers. Parks and recreations are falling by the wayside because the cost to maintain them can't be absorbed and workforce resources are inadequate. The military continues to expand its reach but the troops aren't signing up. Disaster Relief efforts still need our help. (Don't forget we are in the early phase of hurricane season.)

This nation has needs for its security and maintenance. One way to effectively do this would be to create opportunities for the young in need of finding their life's purpose whose backs are strong and minds inquiring. As their parents have done, this generation must be asked to sacrifice of its time, energy and potential talent for the good of their country.

"The Prescription" - Dr. Fisher's Solution
 A Call to National Service

A National Service Draft which provides options for those 18-26 to serve their nation is an idea whose time may be at hand. With minimal exemptions this type of service would do much for our nation. Deferments for college would have a requirement of one year of service for each year deferred. In addition, those who served would be given credit toward educational cost with preferential consideration for any federal grants, scholarships and future employment.

 The Patient File
"A Call For National Service" by Dr. Ada M. Fisher

The National Disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina has proven that we need more citizen volunteers for National Service between 18-30. Older workers with critical talents in public health, the coast guard, as well as private groups such as the Red Cross or Salvation Army need more to step forward to help. Right now this nation is most vulnerable to a terrorist attack and we don’t have the troops we need for domestic and international operations.
